We live in a democracy where people have rights as individuals to not be violated. Democracy should not be used to pass one particular moral value to the attack or to the oppression of others.
"Some people attempt to legislate morality because they believe that if something is immoral, it obviously ought to be illegal. If people ought not to do it, then others should prevent them from doing it. A common response to this is to say that 'people have different moralities' and they ought not to impose 'their morality' on others. In a totalitarian society, it makes sense to have a government regulate morality because the government by definition is a dictatorship that dictates what's right or wrong, but in a democracy and a representative republic where the people are free, it does not make any sense for the government to come in and regulate people's morality."
